3D Printed Orthotics and Prosthetics 🗓

3D printing (or additive manufacturing) has become an innovative driving force in orthotics and prosthetics (O&P), allowing for highly customized, precise, and affordable solutions. 3D printing also reduces production time, enabling rapid prototyping and faster turnaround for patients, which can be particularly beneficial for growing children or those requiring adjustments. Although traditional methods are still widely used, more clinicians increasingly integrate 3D printing into their daily practices as the economics of using 3D technologies improves. Furthermore, because 3D printing can be performed in-house or locally, logistics costs and lead times are reduced, providing patients faster service and fewer fitting sessions. For practitioners and clinics, this means a more efficient business model, allowing for a quicker return on investment, lower overhead, and the ability to affordably serve a growing number of patients. Join us for our annual 3DHEALS O&P event and a panel of experts from the clinics, industry, startup, and non-profit organizations. Explore where the next growth opportunity is. We will also use this opportunity to fundraise for our non-profit organization Victoria Hand Project.

Dental 3D Printing 2024: What’s New (Now On-Demand) 🗓

Since 2017, dental 3D printing has been an essential focus for the 3D printing world. The dream scenario of every dental practice having a “chair-side” mini factory is still the end goal. But like every other vertical, transforming dentistry is nuanced. From a lack of biocompatible materials to impractically expensive capital requirements, this dream has yet to be realized. However, as an industry observer, we are witnessing slow but steady progress. As Dr. Johnson, one of our speakers, mentioned in his interview, this reality is closer now than ever, with improvements taking place in every aspect of this transformation. Almost every newsletter we published would include one or two new dental 3D printing materials. From a clinical perspective, Every dental specialty (endodontists, implantologists, prosthodontists, orthodontists, etc) has participated in at least one 3DHEALS dental event. Some even have their startups. The willingness to innovate and change is evident.

At this event, the central concept of “automation” will be the focus. While many tech giants are investing heavily in LLMs (large language models), the investment in “other” branches of AI/ML is often overlooked and probably equally critical. We have more than one speaker who will speak on the subject. The end goal is 10x or 100x productivity, quality, and accessibility to dental care. As I have written in our Dental Guide, many Americans live edentulous lives. Join this free live event, be part of the conversation, and be part of the change.

Although the live event has ended, on-demand recording will be free for everyone on Zoom Event Hub for one Week.

Dr. Simon Sonntag, CEO & Co-Founder of Virtonomy, has been working in the medical device field for over a decade and has experienced first-hand the challenges of developing and bringing a medical device to market and in clinical practice. Using simulation technology in this field for over ten years now, he has seen the tremendous potential of combining it with digital patient twins – not only to support medical device development but also for the regulatory process and clinical trials. He learned that there is a huge demand from the industry to reduce the time, cost, and risk involved in developing medical products, and these so-called in silico methods can achieve this. Therefore, in 2020 he co-founded Virtonomy with the clear mission to change this industry. Virtonomy stands as a pioneer in the realm of digital patient twins, introducing an end-to-end platform that seamlessly merges real world patient data, artificial intelligence, multiphysics simulations, and predictive analytics to support the medical industry. Virtonomy addresses a significant problem: mitigating the elevated risks, complexities, and time constraints entailed in medical device development, ultimately streamlining the journey to market introduction. Utilizing their advanced technology, they enable medical device developers to conduct product development and testing in the computer, reducing traditional in vivo (animal/human) and in vitro (laboratory) tests with so-called in silico experiments (computer). This makes it possible to explore the interaction of the medical device with physically accurate modeling of the in vitro setup or anatomy of the target population based on real patient data as input. Backed by the FDA and EU Commission, it’s set to cover over 40% of approvals via virtual patients and simulations. The vision of Virtonomy extends to personalized medicine in the future.
