New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) are redefining how preclinical safety and efficacy are evaluated by shifting away from traditional animal models toward human-relevant, technology-driven approaches such as complex in vitro systems, 3D organoids, organs-on-chips, and in silico modeling. These methods aim to improve the predictive power of human responses, reduce development time and cost, and minimize the ethical and scientific limitations of animal testing, aligning with broader efforts across the life sciences to modernize drug development. NAMs are increasingly central in conversations about AI-enhanced 3D models, microphysiological systems, and data-rich platforms that can better capture human biology at the preclinical stage.[fda] In the United States, recent FDA policy initiatives have begun to operationalize this vision by providing a formal validation and regulatory framework for NAMs in preclinical drug development. In March 2026, the FDA released draft guidance, “General Considerations for the Use of New Approach Methodologies in Drug Development,” outlining principles for human biological relevance, technical characterization, and fit-for-purpose use of NAMs in nonclinical safety packages submitted with INDs. Complementary actions under broader modernization efforts, such as Operation TrialBlazer, explicitly encourage the use of NAMs—including AI-powered models and organ-on-chip systems—as alternatives to animal toxicology for dose selection and safety assessment, signaling that regulators now expect sponsors to consider NAMs when they can improve human predictivity and support safer, faster translation to first-in-human trials.[fda] In this upcoming virtual event, our panelists will focus on the latest technical development, industry adoption, and regulatory landscape surrounding approaches using biofabrication and microfluidics-focused platforms.

3DHeals - Discover 3D Bioprinting and Healthcare Innovations

Bench to Bedside: Bioprinting Innovations brings together an exceptional lineup of pioneers spanning the full translational journey of 3D bioprinting — from novel absorbable biomaterials and clinical-grade bone implants to physiologically relevant in vitro models and next-generation drug discovery platforms. This event arrives at a pivotal moment for the field. The global 3D bioprinting market was valued at $2.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 15.1%, reaching an estimated $5.4 billion by 2030 (Ref 1), driven by advances in biomaterials, stem cell research, and rising adoption across pharmaceutical and clinical applications. Bioprinted tissue models alone are projected to drive $1.5 billion in drug testing market value by 2028 (Ref 1), while orthopedic implants are expected to capture 33.9% of bioprinting revenue in 2025 (Ref 2) — precisely the intersecting domains our speakers represent. The program opens with Bezwada Biomedical's Dr. Rao Bezwada and Dr. Neeti Srivastava, who bring over 40 years of combined expertise in absorbable polyurethane chemistry, drug delivery systems, and more than 150 issued U.S. patents — including the chemistry behind Monocryl®, which has generated over $2 billion in worldwide sales since 1993, and a portfolio of more than 10 FDA-approved products commercialized for wound healing and bone regeneration. Monica Wellejus, Chief Commercial Officer of Ossiform®, adds the commercialization lens — seven years of experience taking 3D printed, bio-integrative bone substitutes from development through regulatory approval and into global markets, as well as bone-mimicking 3D cell culture systems for in vitro cancer and bone research. Carlos Ezio, CEO of Criocore and a former researcher in the Shrike Zhang Lab at Harvard Medical School, brings the drug discovery perspective — having contributed to over 30 publications and multiple patents spanning 3D bioprinting, organ-on-chip platforms, and complex tissue models, and recognized as an MIT Innovators Under 35 LATAM honoree. Joanna Xylas, PhD, Cofounder and CEO of Materialize Bio — an NSF-backed Tufts University spinout — rounds out the panel with expertise in translating natural biopolymer implants into first-in-human studies using the company's proprietary GLEN 3D™ manufacturing platform, built on a career guiding first-in-class biosynthetic and 3D-printed implants through clinical strategy at Brixton Biosciences and TISSIUM. Together, this panel covers every critical layer of the bioprinting ecosystem: the polymer chemistry that makes implants possible, the printing technology that gives them form, the commercial and regulatory strategy that brings them to patients, and the in vitro models that are reshaping how drugs are developed. Whether you are a researcher, clinician, entrepreneur, or investor, this is a conversation you cannot afford to miss.

3D surgical planning is undergoing rapid transformation, converging physical and digital tools into precision-first clinical workflows. The surgical planning software market is projected to surge from $12 billion in 2025 to over $71 billion by 2035, driven by AI integration, personalized medicine, and advanced imaging. Point-of-care manufacturing, AI-driven DICOM segmentation, and solution-as-a-service models are among the most disruptive emerging trends. Orthopedic surgery commands the largest market share at 41.8%, with Stryker, Siemens Healthineers, Brainlab, Materialise, and GE Healthcare among the dominant players. In December 2025, Axial3D received FDA clearance for AI tools that significantly reduce scan-to-model design time — a signal of accelerating regulatory momentum. Risks remain real: reimbursement pathways for patient-specific tools are uneven, regulatory clearance timelines are long, and clinical validation data lag commercial adoption. Interoperability among imaging systems, planning software, and manufacturing workflows remains inconsistent across institutions. Attend this rare event with global experts to understand where the clinical, regulatory, and technological edges meet — and how innovators like those building patient-specific implant systems are solving problems that generic tools simply cannot.

Why this event? Because future healthcare will be more personalized, 3D data-driven, and digitally fabricated (e.g., 3D printing and bioprinting). Life in 3D is the only niche-focused event that unites the most transformative next-gen medical devices, therapeutics, and biotools under one cohesive investment lens, including but not limited to —cell therapy, biofabrication, frontier medical devices, and drug discovery. If you are ready for a mindset shift, this is the event for you.

Since 2018, 3DHEALS has hosted more than 100 early-stage startups in the 3D medtech and biotech space to raise funds and receive advisory through its Pitch3D program. This year, the company is organizing its first dedicated in-person event for investors and entrepreneurs in this space. The event will take place the night before the official 2026 JP Morgan Healthcare Conference in the beautiful downtown San Francisco office of K&L Gates, California, USA. The goal is to host investors and founders who share a maniacal belief that the 3D mindset will enable the next wave of biomedical innovations.

While this event is mostly by invitation only (for Example, Pitch3D founders), related parties can purchase a limited number of tickets. The event is capped at 150 attendees. To qualify as an investor, you must demonstrate that you are an accredited investor or belong to a relevant investment institution. To qualify for media tickets, you must provide relevant LinkedIn or website credentials to be admitted.

The final virtual event of the year sits within 3DHEALS’ ongoing effort to move “design for 3D technology” beyond tool-centric discussions and into questions of clinical value, scalability, and ecosystem-building. Prior and related 3DHEALS programs on “Design for Medical 3D Printing” and “Design for 3D Printed Medical Devices” emphasize topics such as patient-specific customization, digital surgical planning, and material/biomechanical considerations, and this session builds on that foundation by focusing on the next generation of design methods and software.
Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) emerged as a distinct discipline once engineers realized that “printing” parts designed for casting or machining squandered most of 3D printing’s advantages. From the 1980s through the 1990s, additive technologies such as stereolithography, fused deposition modeling, and selective laser sintering were marketed mainly for rapid prototyping, so design activity focused on speed and visualization rather than functional optimization. As industrial users in aerospace, automotive, and healthcare began adopting additive manufacturing for production parts in the 2000s and 2010s, the need to redesign components specifically around layer‑wise fabrication, support strategies, and new geometric possibilities crystallized into what is now called DfAM.

Today, DfAM is characterized by a toolbox of computational techniques—topology optimization, generative design, and architected lattice materials—implemented in specialized software from vendors such as nTop and other AM-focused platforms. These tools help engineers consolidate assemblies, lightweight structures, embed conformal cooling or fluid channels, and tailor local stiffness or porosity in ways that are impractical with conventional manufacturing. At the same time, industrial workflows increasingly integrate automated manufacturability checks, simulation of print-induced distortion, and process-aware design rules, reflecting a transition from ad hoc experimentation to more mature, engineering-driven design methodologies.

From a market perspective, DfAM grows alongside the broader additive manufacturing industry, which is projected to expand from roughly 26 billion USD in 2025 to over 125 billion USD by 2034, with design software identified as a key segment. The strongest DfAM pull comes from aerospace and defense, automotive, and industrial sectors seeking weight reduction, part consolidation, and high-performance cooling or fluid handling, followed closely by healthcare, where implants, surgical guides, and dental components benefit from patient-specific geometries and internal architectures. Additional growth areas include consumer electronics, energy, and high-value consumer products, where customized, lightweight, or ergonomically optimized designs justify the higher cost of AM and reward organizations that invest in DfAM skills and tools.

Rob is also a National Geographic Explorer. He is developing new algorithms, materials, and fabrication tools to automatically design and manufacture electromechanical systems, with a focus on robotics. He also creates automated methods to study animal behavior in the wild. Rob did his PhD work with Hod Lipson at Cornell University and his postdoctoral work at MIT with Daniela Rus. Funded by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and a Liebmann Fund fellowship, his doctoral work demonstrated systems capable of automatically assembling functional electromechanical devices, with the goal of printing robots that literally walk out of the printer. During this time he also created low-cost, low power, and low-mass radiofrequency tags, and developed an “inverse-GPS” tracking system based on time-of-flight measurements that use 3 orders of magnitude less energy than GPS. He holds a B.A. in Physics from Ithaca College, a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, and an M.S. and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University. Prior to his Doctoral work, Dr. MacCurdy spent 10 years at the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology, where he worked as a research engineer developing remote-monitoring tools for birds and wildlife. These systems employed methods including acoustic, radiofrequency, solar-geolocation, and inertial; battery energy-density limitations led to research in multisource energy harvesting, and the first vibration energy harvesters applied to flying insects and birds. Thousands of his terrestrial and marine autonomous recording units (ARUs) have been deployed worldwide and are still in widespread use.
