It’s 3 AM.
A long list of to-dos for 3DHEALS2020 suddenly re-appears in front of my eyes upon my early wakening. This happens every time 3DHEALS hosts a large global conference. The level of anxiety would increase exponentially, and I would ask myself, “Jenny, why are you doing this to yourself again?!”
It is because I am foolish and I am hungry.
Working with 3DHEALS is really a project that allows me a personal space to be as creative as I desire and work with others who are equally if not more many times more creative, daring, tenacious, foolish, and hungry.
When Coronavirus hit the bay area, I could have canceled the conference with little financial risk, but then, that’s just not me, and that’s not what I identify 3DHEALS with. 3DHEALS is a platform that attracts individuals with grit, risk-tolerance, and agility. Individuals who have or want to have a purpose in life, that’s more ambitious than most people.
Before the pandemic, we have promised a global stage to allow many of these talented individuals and early-stage startups to shine, and we need to deliver just that if not more. It is part of our culture.
Perhaps not surprisingly, every speaker and participating organization/company stayed on the course to a virtual seminar. Best of all, because of the virtual format, we added 25% more programming to the existing program.
That’s because people understand why 3DHEALS exists.
Five years ago, I founded 3DHEALS because I was frustrated with the fact that 3D printing was not delivering what it promised, and I attribute that failure to the fact that people from different disciplines are not talking to each other.
Physicians and dentists paid heftily for an education that is largely established decades ago, and the newer digital tools are (still) not part of the traditional classroom. It is not just the lack of skills that is sad, it is the lack of ability to think differently to solve existing problems in healthcare is more threatening. “mass customization”, “decentralization”, “complexity for free” are foreign languages to many in my profession. On the engineering side, many have innovated, but the lack of end-user insight cost much time and money, and many ended up with impractical solutions to problems not worthy of solving. Not everyone has a doctor friend who understands CAD/CAM, material science, chemistry, manufacturing, etc. On top of those, we also have business competitions, turf war, geopolitics, and politics in general at multiple levels, reasons that prevent free idea exchange, education, and collaboration.
In a way, 3D printing has only benefitted a few, and not the mass as we have hoped.
To solve that problems, along with our 20+ community managers all over the world, volunteers who share the same vision as I, 3DHEALS has hosted or co-hosted more than 80 events world-wide to create Moments when these barriers are removed, and when innovation in healthcare 3D printing can truly accelerate during these “mini-Renaissance”.
In the past five years, people moved, changed jobs, and sometimes even industries, but 3DHEALS events, online or offline, continue to serve to keep critical conversations alive, glue people closer together, and inspire new adventures in life.

There is no doubt that legal and regulatory issues will be one of the most critical factors determining the success of future healthcare 3D printing and bioprinting products. However, 3D printing in healthcare is a super new field, and legal experts in this field who has established a track record and legitimacy are only a handful. This session will include the most comprehensive list of legal and regulatory concerns, including intellectual property/patent issues, product liability, FDA pathway, manufacturing standards, and more, specifically for healthcare 3D printing. I think if this pandemic has taught anything is that globalization has consequences. Being well-acquainted with global 3D printing innovation hubs and ecosystems is a requirement for success. We are fortunate to have America Makes director John Wilczynski and NAMIC director Dr. Chaw Sing Ho along with experts from Turkey, India, and Taiwan to share how healthcare innovations can thrive in both local and global environment.
Dental 3D Printing
No healthcare 3D printing conference is complete without a good discussion on digital dentistry. Dental 3D printing is one of the fastest growing and democratizing field in healthcare 3D printing. Thanks to our dental ambassador Dr. Nabeel Cajee’s help, we are able to curate an unprecedented group of speakers from a combination of academia and industry, end users and manufacturers focusing critical issues facing the industry both short and long term.
3D Printing in Space
When Elon Musk revealed his ambitious plan for the Mars expedition, he asked, “why travel anywhere”? The true motivation behind the expedition is often beyond personal gain and curiosity. There is a deeper kind of driving force. It is the driving force that inspired our ancestors to invent tools and to discover fire millions of years ago. It is the driving force that enabled us to land the moon and to discovered nuclear power. We have this driving force because that is who we are, and that is what gives humanity meaning. It is a force that comes from our deepest desire to survive for as long and as much as possible as a species.
So why does 3D printing and bioprinting in space matter? For one, the world in microgravity is entirely different and result in a thought paradigm shift, says ISS/CASIS outreach manager Rachel Clemens. In particular, bioprinting and biofabrication using live cells show tremendous promise in microgravity. This world-class expert panel including speakers from NASA Vascular Tissue Challenge, ISS/CASIS, Techshot, and Allevi at 3DHEALS2020 will update us on where the science is, and what next immediate application will take off.
3D Printing and Artificial Intelligence:
Both 3D printing and artificial intelligence are extraordinary new tools discovered in the last several decades by humanity. However, changing the world is not easy, and fundraising remains as one of the biggest challenge founders will meet.
Since April 20th, 2018, 3DHEALS has hosted online and offline #Pitch3D regularly, introducing 30+ startups from all over the world to institutional investors who are interested in healthcare 3D printing, bioprinting, and adjacent fields including AI and cybersecurity (within 3D printing), 3D scanning, VR/AR, 3D Visualization, synthetic materials, and regenerative medicine.
