Is currently a Simulation Specialist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. His responsibilities include providing clinical and technical training for staff members at the medical center. He has being using 3D printing for printing patient specific anatomy for different hospital  departments for pre-surgical planning, viewing and printing medical devices, providing printed models for patients, and rapid prototyping for Research and Biomedical Center. He is actively involved in being a part of the growing momentum of 3D printing in Healthcare. He has been using 3D printing for over a year. He is currently using Makerbot, Formlabs,  and CubePro printers. Softwares used include Mimics, Fusion360, Meshmixer, TinkerCAD, Simplify3D, and 123Design.

Dr. David Frakes
Received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering, the M.S. degree in mechanical engineering, and the Ph.D. degree in bioengineering, all from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  In 2008 he joined the faculty at Arizona State University (ASU) where he is a jointly appointed associate professor in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering and the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering.  Dr. Frakes received the 2009 ASU Centennial Professor of the Year Award, the 2012 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the 2014 Innovator of the Year Award in the state of Arizona, and the 2014 World Technology Network Award in Health and Medicine. His general research interests include image and video processing, medical imaging, fluid dynamics, and machine vision. Dr. Frakes’ work is currently funded by Google, the American Heart Association, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Mayo Clinic, among others. Dr. Frakes is also currently serving as a Technical Project Lead in the Advanced Technologies and Projects group at Google.

Emerging Applications of 3D Printing in Surgical Planning

As the surgical planning landscape opens to 3D printing, highly diverse applications of the technology are emerging.  This talk will cover a range of emerging applications that are already in the clinic including planning for congenital heart defect repairs, endovascular interventions, and neurosurgery, among others.  The talk will also cover several applications of the future that use 3D printing to go beyond anatomy toward physiology-based surgical planning.

Jose Morey, MD
Is a Senior Medical Scientist with the IBM Watson Project and a radiologists for the US Department of Veterans Affairs where he directs nationwide implementation of technology advancement and innovation as a part of the Field-Based Health Informatics Leadership Council. He holds an adjunct professorship of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of Virginia, is a professor of Internal Medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School and is Scientific Chair for the Society of Imaging and Informatics in Medicine. He has authored or co-authored over 30 original papers, book chapters and abstracts covering his fields of expertise which entail: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Prescriptive Analytics, 3D printing, Cognitive Decision Support Tools, Informatics, Touch Free Natural User Interface, Business Development and Research. Dr. Morey has given numerous lectures by invitation including to the Radiologic Society of North America, the Chinese Medical Association and the Senate of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

3D Printing in Academic Hospitals

Currently we are making 3D prints of complex fractures for pre-operative management. This is done in hopes to decrease procedure time there by improving patient outcomes from decreased risk of infection, reduced anesthesia exposure and improved physician practice. This would also increase facility revenue by increasing room turnover. There is also an educational component so different stages of trainees can get similar exposure thereby being able to create a more objective form of evaluation by standardizing the surgeries they are exposed to.¬† We are also working on a new modeling system to create full scale models of the female pelvis with color coded intrinsic ligaments. We plan on then placing these ligaments under stress to evaluate their tensile strength and their ability to stretch.¬† Our hopes is to be able to create objective testing methods to evaluate whether given the known size of the fetus a pregnant female will be able to undergo vaginal delivery safely or require Cesarian section. This is to improve patient outcomes and woman’s health. We are also in the development of a fullscale 3D printing lab at the Hampton VA medical center to improve veteran access and improve veteran care.¬† We plan on improving turn around time and outcomes for prosthetic placement, orthotic creation, dental care (tooth and invasaline and pre-op planning) and custom made parts for veteran mobility.¬† This will be housed and directed by the department of radiology and aid various departments such as Research, Education, Prostetics, Dental, Biomed and PMnR.
